The spectrophotometers Dobson network operated by the SMN in Argentina, allows to know in
detail the daily state of the ozone layer along the entry Country from Ushuaia to La Quiaca and in
particular the phenomenon of the decrease or anomaly that occurs in Antarctica every southern
spring (Ozone Hole). This is why it is necessary to maintain the instruments in optimal operating
conditions to make accurate measurements and thus be able to contribute to the existing global
standardized network dedicated to the control and monitoring the state of the ozone layer. Dobson
spectrophotometers are WMO-recognized surface instruments for ozone layer monitoring and
trend determination, constituting the global surface ozone monitoring network. These instruments
are also the main reference to guarantee the correct operation of the active instruments on board
of satellites, which are those that measure the ozone layer that surrounds the planet globally. It is
essential to monitor the ozone layer not only because it is the natural defensive barrier against
harmful UV radiation, but also because of the role it plays in climate change since it has been
identified that the role of aerosols and ozone in the control of the thermal balance of the
atmosphere as two of the greatest sources of uncertainty when predicting the evolution of the
climate.
